Tips to Avoid Mould
Help us to help you keep your property in good condition and free of mould. Mould is often caused by excess condensation, usually as a result of a lack of ventilation that results in high humidity levels. There are a number of things you can do to try to avoid mould build up.
Here are some things tenants can do to avoid mould build up
BATHROOMS
USE EXTRACTOR FAN
TO REDUCE MOISTURE
Keep your bath/shower rooms clean and use extractor fans provided to help extract excess condensation build up. Keep doors closed so moist air does not spread to colder areas, where it can turn to condensation and make windows and walls damp. Keep the bathroom window slightly open on a trickle lock to allow airflow.
KITCHEN
REDUCE MOISTURE
FROM COOKING
Use pan lids to reduce the amount of steam entering the air. Don’t leave pans to boil dry, and use the extractor fan when there is one. You might also want to open a kitchen window temporarily if creating a lot of steam; however don't forget to close it again after cooking to retain heat in the property.
OPEN WINDOWS
TO AIR THE ROOMS
Opening windows, even a small amount, can have a significant effect in combating mould growth and condensation problems, introducing fresh air and increasing air flow.
Use trickle vents
Keeping windows wide open is not an option in cold weather, however
opening trickle vents or open trickle locks on windows gives enough airflow to minimise mould growth.
DRY CLOTHES OUTSIDE
WHERE POSSIBLE
Drying clothes indoors can produce lots of excess moisture. Whilst we understand it is not always possible, drying clothes outside can help to reduce excess moisture indoors.
FREE STANDING FURNITURE KEEP A GAP BETWEEN THE WALL
Make sure air can circulate by leaving gaps between furniture and the wall.
WIPE AWAY CONDENSATION
If you spot a build up of condensation on your windows or walls, wipe this away. If you spot mould starting to form, clean the area with a bleach spray or mould & mildew removers to avoid it spreading further.
